Claudius Caesar established one of the most northern cities of his empire, Savaria, today Szombathely, in 43 BC. The town is proud of its nearly two-millenary history.
One of its most protected treasure is the Iseum, the biggest sanctuary of the Egyptian Isis-cult excavated in Pannonia. The Borostyánkõút (Amber-road), famous trading way connecting the Baltic-sea with the Roman Empire went through Savaria. At the end of the eighteenth century Szombathely became a cathedral town, the monumental cathedral, the bishop's palace and the clerical seminar are from that period. The synagogue gives place to the Béla Bartók music school and the concert hall.
